My early career was as an educator and counselor on issues of intimate partner and sexual violence.
Now working at a site of conscience that educates about the history of systemic racism, with African American journeys as our focal point, we are aware that shame is one of the responses that may be activated when visitors from all backgrounds confront the stories we tell. Increasingly -- institutions such as IAAM are trying to prepare for these responses -- not as therapists, but as compassionate hosts. I am hoping that the resources being shared in this series will give me insight into how to use compassion in my unique workplace to help folks find a path toward addressing painful truths and building a more compassionate and justice-facing world.
